Team Led by Professor Joong Hee Lee Develops Highly-Conductive Composites

The research team led by Professor Joong Hee Lee of the BIN Fusion Technology department has announced a ground breaking research result in the development of molecule composites. This research can turn the products of our dreams into reality, such as an e-paper equipped with a display that bends like paper, and a computer that you can easily wear like clothing. Hence, the research is receiving great interest within the academia.

Professor Lee's team announced that they have published the research results of their development of 'Graphene Based Highly-Conductive Composites', which they worked on the project together with a research team led by Professor Bon-Cheol Ku at the Jeonbuk Branch of KIST, in the April edition of the 'Nano Letters, (impact factor 12.1)', the world famous journal in the field of nano-technology.

Graphene is a transparent carbon nano-material that is made by pealing a layer off the surface of graphite, a natural mineral. It is 100 times stronger than steel, and its thermal and current conductivity are 2 and 1,000 times faster than diamonds and copper, respectively. Having such characteristics, it's lauded as the 'material of dreams' and is the focus of attention from various industries.

In order to manufacture highly conductive composites, a large amount of graphene is required. Also, graphene has a tendency to clot within solvents and organic solvents when it's mixed with plastic (high molecule substances). So despite its outstanding properties, its industrial applications were limited.

Therefore, in order to manufacture highly conductive molecule composites, a method to improve the dispersibility and conductivity at the same time was required, and the research team successfully found a ground breaking method to resolve the issue.

The manufacturing process, discovered by the research team, can improve the electrical conductivity and the mechanical strength of high performance engineering plastic at the same time. This process opens the door to applications as a coating layer for display materials, as well as in the aerospace composites industry, and is garnering attention to the research.

The domestic patent has already been registered for this new technology, while the international patent has been applied for.
